   Maybe something in, or some part of the following would be useful to you:

   There is a saying that Castles in the air cost a great deal to keep up. It is also true that Castles on land were and are costly in upkeep. It took a large amount of funds and resources drawn from feudal lands and people to converge into building and maintaining Castles. The feudal system was an ideal system whereby resources could be withdrawn from the assets accumulated by peasants from their labouring the land. The Castle served to both protect the locals and also serve to keep them down from the upper social levels. If wasn’t often that the peasants could surge upward to overcome the system they were in. Castle-Keeps were intended to keep whatever the owners could take from their more lowly customers both local and further afield.
