Windsor Castle is a royal palace and one of the principal residences of the British sovereign. Queen Elizabeth and her family spend some weekends here. Her Majesty uses it for state and private entertaining. Windsor Castle , Buckingham Palace and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh are the official residences of the royal family, while Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle are their private homes.

The castle is situated in Windsor, in Berkshire, the English county. It is the largest inhabited castle in the world. William the Conqueror also lived here many, many years back. Since then, the royal family has continuously used it.

The castle’s floor area is about 484,000 square feet. Most of the Kings and Queens of England and Great Britain have had a say in the evolution of this gigantic castle. The British history has plenty of references to the Windsor Castle, which has been the royal family’s home and fortress, and sometimes even their prison, for centuries. The history of the castle and the Royalty has been closely linked. Each reigning royal has made additions and expansions or reconstructions when needed and as preferred by them.

The Round Tower is a landmark of the castle. However, it is not cylindrical but irregular. It is on a man-made hill and the shape is determined by the hill. The Round Tower divides the castle into two sections known as wards. The lower ward is home to St George’s chapel while the upper ward contains the Royal apartments and the formal state rooms, which include St George’s hall, a vast room which has a ceiling decorated with the coat of arms and present members of the Order of the Garter.

There is a regular change of guards, which form an attraction for visitors. The guards stand stiffly for hours, not moving a single muscle. Each marches from his position during the change of guards and it is a solemn occasion. The Windsor Castle is open for public viewing during certain times, mainly when the royal family is not in residence.

Visiting rights to the Windsor Castle are restricted and if you wish to take a tour around the castle, you need to make reservations with a tour service. Make sure you stay at a nearby Slough hotel and arrive early for the tour. Check out the Copthorne Hotel Slough Windsor for some quite relaxation and modern comfort during your hotel stay.

I hear motte and bailey fortifications were built after 1066, but then what was used prior to that? What types of buildings did the Kings and nobility live in?

Windsor Castle which is situated at Windsor in Berkshire, U.K. is the largest inhabited castle in the world. The castle’s history dates back to the rein of King Edward III who started conceptualizing the idea of this castle and even after 900 years the Windsor Castle is still used as the official residence of the Queen as well as a working palace.

This massive 484000 square feet royal residence is one of the principal residences of the British Monarch and even nowadays Queen Elizabeth II spends her many evenings in this palace. Many Kings and Queens of England, then Great Britain, directly influenced the architecture of this castle by various reconstructions and restoration projects and presently it is considered as a depiction of the grandeur of British Monarchy and the evolution of architecture to its visitors.

Even though the architecture of the Windsor Castle changed through the course of time, the localization of the main features of the palace remained the same. The significant features of this magnificent castle can be noted as follows: the Round Tower, the courtyard named as ‘The Quadrangle’, state apartments and private apartments, St. George’s Chapel, King Henry VIII gate and the Edward III tower.

One of the trademarks of the Windsor Castle is the Round Tower; a cylindrical building which houses the lower ward with St. George’s Chapel and the upper ward with the royal apartments and the state rooms. The state rooms of the castle are lavishly furbished with the finest treasures of Royal Collection and will definitely be an eye pleaser. Other attractions include Drawings Gallery, Queen Mary’s Doll House, 14th Century St. George’s Chapel and the Royal burial grounds.

The park which overlooks the Windsor Castle and other attractions are opened for the public on certain days of the year and if you are willing to visit this fascinating and historical castle it is advisable that you plan your tour early. Millenium UK consists of best Windsor Hotels in the area which are recognized as the best hospitality service provider around the area of the Windsor Castle.

COTTAGES & CASTLES, the Scottish holiday lettings firm, has bought fellow leisure company Arran HideAways. The acquisition will add 140 properties to Cottages & Castles’ stable, transforming the company into the largest self-catering holiday letting firm in the country with more than 500 sites.

No figure has been revealed, however it is expected to boost Cottages & Castles’ turnover by as much as 30% to more than £3m. Arran HideAways has already secured 1,114 weeks of accommodation occupancy for October 2008 to October 2009. This number is expected to increase as Cottages & Castles opens up each property to a wider market audience of potential holidaymakers.

Cottages & Castles manager Sue Bourne said: “Arran is very much a second home island and is a popular holiday destination with huge potential on a national and international level. Given the current economic downturn, coupled with more people holidaying at home, we believe Arran is set to become the place to holiday for 2009.”

Arran HideAways will continue to manage the self-catering properties on the Isle of Arran. It will also run guest services on behalf of Cottages & Castles.

Credit crunch conscious festive revellers are booking up Scottish castles and country mansions as they are now one of the most affordable options for spending holidays, according to Cottages & Castles Ltd, Scotland’s largest specialist holiday letting agency.

If you’re a businessman who knew the ins and outs of a business, you might want to check out the big return on invest that a single inflatable bounce castle can provide. This is the best business idea for people who are currently looking for a lucrative investment and a very manageable home business for their family.

This business is very simple that even a regular housewife can attend to it. It is the perfect business venture of work-from-home moms who want some income on the side. With just a single inflatable bounce castle, you can earn big money right from your home – something that you didn’t imagine possible.

Wondering how the business works? Well, it is fairly easy. All you have to do is to invest on one inflatable bouncer and rent it to the people who need it. Advertise it as a party attraction, a theme park addition, or a playground life-size toy. You can have it rented or you can the children who want to play inside it per head. Entrance fee may cost anywhere from $2 to $5 per kid per hour. Big inflatable bouncers can accommodate 20 kids at a time.

An inflatable bounce castle may cost anywhere from $999 to a few thousand dollars. Given that, you can define the hour’s worth of rental of these toys. For birthday parties, you can rent it at $20 or so per hour. In five hours, you will earn $100. You just need 10 scheduled rentals of the inflatable bounce castle and you should be able to get your investment money back. After the tenth rental, you start earning money out of your inflatable rental business.

Of course, if you want to double your income, you can buy more inflatable bouncers. The more bouncers you schedule for rental, the more money you earn. Just place a couple of advertisements in the leading local paper and on kid’s magazines to create a good client’s base. Once you have several pleased customers, the word would come around, making you the best party organizer in town.

When you buy an inflatable castle, it would come in a set that includes the bouncer itself, the air blower, and a repair kit that is going to very useful if and when the bouncer accidentally got punctured. These bouncers are very easy to install and to maintain. Just leave the blower on for within the specified time and the bouncer will be filled with air. After which, it is ready to be used by kids and adults alike.

A few years ago everyone wanted to travel overseas as much as possible but now our major airports are so crowded, a lot of people are changing their minds. Why spend endless hours fighting through the masses and waiting on the tarmac, when Britain itself has so much to offer. Combine this with concerns for global warming and some pretty nice summers and it now makes increasing sense to stay home.

However you need to do something exciting for your annual summer holiday and so why not rent a Scottish castle and get away from it all. This is becoming increasingly popular with English families, keen to experience something different within a few hours drive from home. There are now some very luxurious properties available and these can be taken by the week, complete with a full team of staff and thousands of acres.

There is a majesty to rural Scotland that has long disappeared in the south of England. Primarily it’s the space available but also guests comment on the gentle nature of the people, the quietness and of course the beauty. Base your self at a lovely ancestral home, complete with spiral staircases, turrets and lots of wood panelling and settle in for a week of sightseeing, golf, long walks and a spot of fishing. There are of course many other fun activities including falconry, quad biking, gorge walking, clay pigeon shooting and horse back rding.

The houses & castles on offer now have en-suite bathrooms, satellite TV, broadband Internet, modern kitchens and all other modern day comforts. They are no longer cold and draughty and guests can now relax in huge comfort. However if they want to rough it, then the great outdoors beckons and Scotland has some incredible wilderness areas, where guests can roam for hours without barely meeting a soul. It is this mix of rural and urban that makes the country so attractive and such a great destination.

After the last war many of the wonderful old homes had been so damaged by the troops, schools and hospitals billeted in them, that they were quickly pulled down. Indeed so much so, that during the 60’s, they were destroying a large house in Scotland at a rate of one a week. Those that survived (and their owners) faced a grim future as successive governments maintained a very high rate of taxation, essential materials were extremely hard to get and wage costs spiralled.

However amazingly many homes did survive and a huge number have been massively restored over the last decade or so. It is testament to the determination of the families that own these homes that this has been possible and where some gave up fortunately a lot of new owners have emerged to continue the struggle. With agriculture, fishing and forestry in decline, it is a huge commitment for even wealthy owners to maintain these huge properties but it gives great pleasure to their families and now in many cases to paying guests.

To add to the estates revenues, many homes can now be taken fully staffed and guests get to experience Castle life. Sitting in these homes, soaking in the history and learning about how they have survived is fun in itself but combine this with a whole mass of activities and you have yourself the ingredients of a wonderful vacation. Most of the properties are very flexible about arrival & departure times and guests can very much control their own timings. So give the airports a rest and experience something a little closer to home!
